Malala Yousufzai

Guysssss. If you’re wondering if we’re ready to say that feminism is no longer necessary, the answer is no, we are not ready to say that feminism is no longer necessary. I’m sure you know about this, but I keep thinking about it and it was either post about Malala or post about shoes I want to buy, and the shoes just aren’t important! Anyway, if you don’t read the news, the gist is that Malala Yousufzai is a fourteen-year-old Pakistani girl who was an outspoken supporter of girls education in Pakistan. The Taliban had her shot for “obscenity” because she said girls should be able to go to school. Obviously, we all agree, this is a horrible thing. But, maybe you say, that’s the Taliban. They also shoot Americans for being Americans and they flew two planes into the World Trade Center and they are bad guys from central casting. And yeah! The Taliban is really bad, thanks Emily, nobody knew that already. But the thing is, fourteen-year-old girls should not be shot for wanting to go to school. And women shouldn’t be forced to wear a burqa to protect their purity from the prying eyes of men, and Saudi Arabian women shouldn’t have to work in separate buildings from men. We are not post-feminism. Let’s go ahead and give a shit about how women are treated all over the world.
I was going to say maybe I should go work for a non-profit women’s rights group in the Middle East or maybe I should give money or something, but I literally can’t even think of an organization that is doing that sort of work. Do you guys know of one? Why isn’t this being addressed? Is it? Maybe it is! And I just don’t know about it, that’s totally possible. God, the whole thing is so scary and frustrating.
Anyway, happy Friday, sorry I’m such a bummer.
